Corrs sponsored the Annual Conference of the Financial Services Council which was held on 3 - 5 August 2011 at the Gold Coast Convention and Exhibition Centre. The theme of the conference was “Navigating Change” and the conference attracted over 800 delegates from across the financial services industry in Australia.
Michael Chaaya, Partner and Member of the Financial Services Industry Sector at Corrs, chaired a Major Issues Session at the conference. The topic for the session was “Australia’s changing equity market structure” and Michael was joined by Richard Murphy, General Manager, Equity Markets, ASX, and Carole Commerton-Forde, Professor of Finance, Australian National University. The session explored the benefits capital markets competition brings, the growth in dark book and high frequency trading, the role of brokers, and the differences in competition in Australia compared to other jurisdictions.
Other topics discussed at the conference included the Stronger Super and Future of Financial Advice reforms, and the economic role played by the financial services industry. Corrs was also represented at the conference by Christine Maher, Partner and Joanne Dwyer, Special Counsel.
As a sponsor of the conference, Corrs hosted a VIP table at the Gala Dinner with senior representatives from AIA, AMP, AXA, MLC, Vanguard and Zurich joining the Corrs table. Corrs representatives at the dinner included Andrew Messenger, Stephen Price, Michael Chaaya and Joanne Dwyer. The Gala Dinner was an opportunity for delegates to support the FSC’s charities and recognise the winners of the FSC’s 2011 industry excellence awards. Corrs congratulates the 2011 recipients for their outstanding contribution to the industry: Melanie Evans from BT Financial Group, Harvey Russell from Colonial First State and Shane Burdack from Munich Re.
