Corrs Chambers Westgarth Partner and CEO, John Denton has been appointed an external adviser on the Federal Government advisory panel to oversee the development of a white paper on the social, economic, strategic and environmental implications of the Asian century for Australia.

The Federal Government decision to commission the white paper on Australia in the Asian Century provides an important and timely endorsement of the need to strengthen Australia’s economic and broader relationships with Asia.

John Denton is currently one of three Prime Ministerial representatives on the APEC Business Advisory Council and leads the Business Council of Australia’s work on Australia’s economic relationships with Asia, and specifically China, as Chairman of the BCA’s Global Engagement Task Force.

This appointment reinforces Corrs’ credentials as a premier adviser on Asian business. As CEO, John continues to drive the leading law firm’s strategy of building strong relationships and capability in Asia. Corrs recently appointed former Australian Ambassador to China, Geoff Raby as Beijing-based adviser and Co-Chair of the firm’s China practice.

John Denton said: “Australia’s competitiveness over the next two decades will depend on our ability to maximise economic opportunities from commercial engagement with Asia. Australia needs to broaden and strengthen our economic relationships throughout the region, and Government and business need to collaborate effectively to ensure Australian businesses are equipped to operate in Asia. This includes developing cross-cultural knowledge and skills.

“The white paper is also an opportunity to examine the types of structural adjustments we need domestically to ensure Australia benefits from the Asian Century”.

External advisers on the advisory panel are: Catherine Livingstone, Chair of Telstra Corporation; John Denton, Partner and CEO, Corrs Chambers Westgarth; and Peter Drysdale, Head of the East Asian Bureau of Economic Research and East Asia Forum at the Crawford School of Economics and Government at the Australian National University.

The advisory panel will provide guidance to the whole-of-government task force, led by Dr Ken Henry AC. The task force will develop analysis and proposals for consideration by the Federal Government.
