Corrs adds five to partnership, seven to special counsel and 36 new associates

Corrs Chambers Westgarth has recognised new talent and future leaders across the board, with the firm announcing a pool of 48 new promotions.

The announcement includes the promotion of five of the firm’s best to partnership, strengthening a growing partner base across diverse practice areas – from China, to construction, litigation and corporate advisory.

All new appointments are effective from 1 July 2013.


Lizzie Knight – Corporate Advisory, Sydney

Well known for her extensive work in cross-border mergers and acquisitions (particularly foreign inbound investment), Lizzie has advised on some of the largest investments in the Australian energy and resources sector.  Her career also reflects a passion and focus on Asia. Lizzie acted on Minmetals acquisition of OZ Minerals’ assets and PetroChina’s joint venture with Shell to acquire Arrow. She also advised BHP Billiton on the renegotiation of its State Agreement for the $30 billion expansion of Olympic Dam.

Jaclyn Riley-Smith – Corporate Advisory, Sydney

Jaclyn specialises in public mergers and acquisitions with experience in takeovers, schemes of arrangement, take-privates and demergers. Jackie has acted on a number of high profile cross-border M&A transactions including for Archer Daniels Midland Company on its $3.4 billion takeover of GrainCorp, Andean Resources on its acquisition by Goldcorp Inc, Fosters Group in the demerger of Treasury Wine Estates, and Staples Inc in its takeover of Corporate Express. 

Matthew Muir – Construction, Brisbane

Matthew acts for major commercial and government clients in the construction, engineering, and energy & resources sectors. As a highly experienced construction and projects lawyer, he has been instrumental to some of the firm’s largest and most complex disputes involving extensive lay and expert evidence with clients including QGC, UGL, Tenix, Australand, Mirvac, and Telstra.

Andrew McCormack – Construction, Brisbane

Andrew is renowned for his ‘front end’ transactional and major project work in the construction, mining, energy and resources and infrastructure sectors.  He provides expert advice on a wide range of  contracts including EPC, EPCM, PPP, Alliance Agreements, mining services contracts, drilling contracts and development agreements.  Andrew’s client base includes QGC, CS Energy, Vale, Leighton Contractors, Woolworths (including the Masters home improvement store rollout in QLD), Queensland Rail and Aurizon.

David Yates – Litigation, Perth

David joined Corrs direct from Dubai as a former partner at the United Arab Emirates (UAE) law firm, Al Tamimi & Company. Before that David was a partner at Allens’ Sydney office. David is internationally recognised for his high profile work as a commercial litigator with significant IP and IT experience. An impressive international client base includes the UAE Ministry of Finance, the UAE National Media Council, MasterCard and General Motors.
