Corrs Chambers Westgarth partner and CEO John W.H. Denton has recently been appointed APEC Business Advisory Council's (ABAC) Chair of the Finance and Economics Working Group (FEWG) for 2014 and Australian representative of the International Chamber of Commerce (ICC) G20 Advisory Group.

These two major policy appointments position Mr Denton at the forefront of global economic policy, where he will advise government leaders on matters of primary importance to business in the region to facilitate closer economic cooperation.

Firstly, as part of ABAC's FEWG Chair role in 2014, Mr Denton will focus on a broad range of priority issues including Macro-Economic Overview and G20 Developments, Asia Pacific Financial Forum and Financial Integration.

The announcement comes as Mr Denton participates at the Fourth Meeting for 2013 of the APEC Business Advisory Council and APEC CEO Summit in Bali, Indonesia last week and this week. Mr Denton joined a briefing of the Australian Prime Minister The Hon Tony Abbott MP for APEC at Parliament House in Canberra recently. Mr Denton is one of only three Prime Ministerial representatives on ABAC and the only law firm CEO appointed.

Secondly, Mr Denton joins senior world business leaders, including Harold (Terry) McGraw - ICC Chairman, and Chairman and CEO of McGraw Hill Financial; Victor K Fung, Chairman, Li & Fung (Hong Kong); and Marcus Wallenberg, Chairman and CEO, SEB (Sweden), as a representative of the ICC G20 Advisory Group, which is central to providing policy recommendations to G20 members. The G20 brings together the world's most advanced and emerging economies and has a core goal of promoting economic prosperity and creating jobs.

This appointment is also complementary to Mr Denton's role as part of the B20 Leaders Group, where he is one of the originating Australian members. The B20 works with the government on the G20 policy agenda and serves as the key business advisory body to the international economic forum.

In 2014 Australia will host the G20, including the Leaders' Summit in Brisbane and a Finance Ministers and Central Bank Governors meeting in Cairns. The program for the Australian B20 will involve a series of dialogues with government and discussions with the B20 community.
