Following a vote by the International Chamber of Commerce’s World Council in Sao Paulo, Brazil on 15 June, Corrs Chambers Westgarth partner and CEO John W.H. Denton AO has been named the organisation’s First Vice-Chairman.
Mr. Denton takes over the role from Sunil Bharti Mittal, Founder and Chairman of Bharti Enterprises, who has taken on the role as Chairman of ICC.
The appointment of Mr. Denton as First Vice-Chairman marks the first time that an Australian has held such a position at ICC. Mr. Denton was first elected to the ICC Executive Board in August 2015 and is the only Australian CEO to sit on the Board.
Mr. Denton said he was honoured to accept the role and looked forward to continuing to represent the interests of business on a global level.
“ICC is an important organisation for businesses around the world, promoting international trade and investment and encouraging international collaboration to give the business community a voice in international policy.
“My role on the ICC Board also allows me to represent Australia in these global discussions, strengthening our commercial ties and ensuring economic growth in Australia is on the agenda,” said Mr. Denton.
ICC Secretary General John Danilovich said: “I look forward to working with John in his new ICC leadership role. I have no doubt his experience and perspective will be an invaluable asset to our world business organisation and its work on behalf of the global business community.”
In addition to his role at ICC, Mr. Denton is one of two originating members of the B20, the business reference group of the G20 and was a member of the Australian B20 Leadership Group. He has also been a long standing member of the International Chamber of Commerce G20 CEO Advisory Group, the primary body for establishing the direction of business input within the G20 process.
ICC is the world's largest business organisation with over 6.5 million members in over 130 countries. It plays a central role in international trade and business and works with intergovernmental bodies including the United Nations, the World Trade Organization and the World Intellectual Property Organization.
