Corrs Chambers Westgarth partner Sandy Mak proved she is at the top of her game, winning the prestigious and competitive Female Partner Award at the Lawyers Weekly Women in Law Awards 2013.
The Women in Law Awards, held in Melbourne on Friday night, recognised leadership and excellence in the legal profession, including the female legal professionals who have challenged, influenced or changed the practice of law in Australia.
Corrs partner and CEO John W.H. Denton said in his mind, there was not a more deserving recipient of the Female Partner Award than Sandy.
“Sandy Mak is a dynamo - a champion of women lawyers inside and outside Corrs, a driver of change in gender diversity, a role model and mentor to young lawyers, a critical member of our leadership team and a formidable corporate M&A lawyer.
“Sandy is one of Corrs’ leading lights. She is a key member of the firm’s partnership and senior management, including as senior Corrs Corporate Partner, Co-Chair of Corrs Diversity Council and member of the Corrs Executive Leadership Team responsible for driving Corrs’ 2015 strategy.”
The judges said they were impressed with the multiple facets to Sandy’s already illustrious career. They noted she had achieved a great deal and relished being a leader and role model. It was clear to them that Sandy was able to successfully manage a busy transactional practice and a young family, while still finding time for a lecturing and academic writing. The judges were also inspired by Sandy’s demonstrated leadership through initiatives for the advancement of women at Corrs.
In addition to Sandy winning the leading female partner award, Corrs also had more shortlisted finalist nominations on the night than any other private practice firm, including:
John Denton was thrilled with the results adding, “The volume of finalists is independent recognition of the strength of Corrs’ approach to enabling a truly diverse workforce. With our market leading diversity policies, initiatives and programs we support our people to thrive and remove barriers to progression. Corrs is creating a high performance culture that not only supports diversity, but celebrates it.”
The exclusive event was held at the Sofitel Melbourne and celebrated the achievements of women in law. The winners represented high achievers from the legal sector, from the most senior to the stars of tomorrow.
This was another excellent result for Corrs. The firm had nominations in six out of the nine categories and represented the lion’s share of the finalist with 13% of the 47 nominees.
