Rhys specialises in large and complex transactions, with an emphasis on mergers and acquisitions, corporate restructures, infrastructure projects (public private partnerships) capital raisings and inbound investment.

He has advised on significant deals for high profile clients including REA Group, Accenture, National Australia Bank, Foster’s Group, Macquarie and the Victorian and Queensland Governments.

Rhys is a Tax Committee member for the Law Council of Australia, a fellow at The Tax Institute, and a board member at Very Special Kids.

Macquarie Consortium

Advised a consortium comprising China Resources (Holdings) Company Limited, Macquarie Capital and Asia Pacific Healthcare Investments Limited on the acquisition of a significant interest in Genesis Care Limited, Australia’s largest cancer and cardiac services provider.

REA Group (

Advised on the tax aspects of the A$130 million acquisition of Hometrack Australia Pty Ltd, a residential property data analytics company from the UK-listed ZPG Plc group.

CCMP Capital Advisors

Advised on all Australian tax aspects of the US$1 billion global acquisition of BGIS, a leading integrated facilities management and real estate services company.


Advised on the Australian tax aspects of the global acquisition of the Cloud Sherpas group, a global cloud advisory and technology services company.

Queensland Department of Transport and Main Roads

Advised on tax aspects of the Gold Coast Rapid Transit project (PPP), including the tax risks associated with private sector bid structures, GST, council rates and land tax issues on land tenure proposals and particularly GST risk associated with the private sector’s securitised structure (Stages 1 and 2).
