Alistair Newton




Alistair is a highly regarded competition and consumer lawyer, with deep transactional, litigious and advisory experience across a range of sectors including digital and media, FMCG, health and manufacturing.

He specialises in obtaining Australian Competition and Consumer Commission (ACCC) clearance for complex mergers and acquisitions, assisting clients in major ACCC investigations and other regulatory processes, and advising on strategically important collaborations between competitors.  

Alistair also regularly co-ordinates litigation relating to competition and consumer law matters, both in the defence of ACCC-initiated enforcement proceedings and on behalf of private litigants.

Comcast Corporation

Acted for Comcast Corporation in respect of its proposed US$65 billion acquisition of Twenty-First Century Fox, Inc.


Acted for BP in relation to its proposed acquisition of Woolworths’ 527-site network of service stations and a network of development sites, and in successfully obtaining ACCC authorisation for the establishment of a convenience, loyalty and fuel discount alliance with Woolworths. Also acted for BP on its defence against ACCC prosecution in relation to an industry price information sharing scheme with various other petrol retailers and a data intermediary.

REA Group

Acted for REA Group in successfully opposing an application for ACCC authorisation by Property Media Group (on behalf of real estate agents) to collectively bargain with and boycott REA


Advised Medibank across a range of competition and regulatory issues, including consolidation in the private hospital sector and collective bargaining amongst hospital groups.

Metropolitan Waste and Resource Recovery Group (MWRRG)

Acted for MWRRG in respect of its applications for ACCC authorisation since 2014, including successfully obtaining ACCC authorisation for joint procurement, contract negotiation and ongoing contract management for waste management services across Melbourne local councils in south-eastern, eastern and central and western Melbourne.
