Kalina is a leading health and medical law specialist with over 30 years' experience advising and defending healthcare facilities, insurers and health practitioners in complex and high-stakes matters. She acts in health disciplinary cases, both defence and prosecution, in matters involving the Office of the Health Ombudsman (OHO), the Australian Health Practitioner Regulation Agency (AHPRA) and before the Queensland Civil and Administrative Tribunal (QCAT). She also manages pre-litigation and litigated medical negligence claims, particularly high-value and multi-party matters.

Kalina has extensive experience acting in coronial investigations and inquests, Royal Commissions, Commissions of Inquiry, and investigations and clinical reviews conducted under the Hospital and Health Boards Act 2011 (Qld). She also advises Hospital and Health Boards on governance, risk management and health policy and has significant experience conducting workplace investigations and advising on insurance matters in healthcare settings.

Kalina has contributed thought leadership on a range of health law issues, including disciplinary sanctions and non-publication orders in QCAT. She is also an experienced mentor and leader, having built and led high-performing teams of junior lawyers throughout her career in private practice.

Advised a Health Service on a complex clinical review and health service investigation spanning multiple years and involving numerous patients, requiring extensive stakeholder management, the preparation and settlement of significant reports and coordination of simultaneous regulatory processes.

Health practitioner disciplinary proceedings

Acted in complex health disciplinary matters involving the health, conduct and performance of health practitioners, including contested proceedings before the Queensland Civil and Administrative Tribunal (QCAT).

Medical negligence claims management

Managed the day-to-day conduct of numerous complex medical negligence claims through a bespoke claims management process, implementing an expedited investigation methodology that significantly truncated time to resolution for affected patients.
